ลักษณะรหัส ICD-10

1.  ขึ้นต้นด้วยตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษ (A – Z) มีตั้งแต่ 3-5 หลัก
      ระหว่างหลักที่ 3 กับ 4 มี จุด (.) คั่น  เช่น A09, J15.4, S72.01 เป็นต้น 
              ข้อควรระวัง อักษร I,L จะมีลักษณะเหมือนเลข 1 อักษร O
      จะเหมือนกับเลข 0  และ อักษร Z จะเหมือนเลข 2  ซึ่งอาจทำให้การคีย์
      รหัสในระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ผิดพลาดได้ โดยเฉพาะผู้ไม่มีความรู้เรื่องรหัสโรค

2.  รหัสรายละเอียดสูง จะเป็นรหัสที่ลงท้ายด้วย .0 - .7                
     รหัสรายละเอียดต่ำมักลงท้ายด้วย .8                                            
     รหัสคำกำกวมมักลงท้ายด้วย .9
                    รหัสที่มีรายละเอียดต่ำหรือเป็นคำกำกวม มักมีคำว่า unspecified,
      NOS หรือ NEC กำกับอยู่     เช่น

            A08.4 Viral intestinal infection, unspecified หรือ

                       Viral:

      4. 1 คำวินิจฉัยอาจต้องให้รหัสหลายรหัส จึงจะถูกต้องตามหลักการให้รหัส
           และครอบคลุมคำวินิจฉัยโรค  เช่น
           G46.2* Posterior cerebral artery syndrome ( I66.2† )
                  ต้องให้รหัสทั้ง 2 รหัส คือ ทั้งรหัส  I66.2 และ G46.2
                      ตามกฎการให้รหัสคู่ (กริช (†)และดอกจัน(*))
